What is it about power couples that entrance us? We want to know their dynamics, what fuels two people’s abilities to collaborate both romantically, and professionally? Husband and wife Nikko and Tienlyn Detranquilli are kindred creative spirits — the poster kids for #RelationshipGoals. It all started with music, which lead to a photographer/muse dynamic for her blog Thoughtful Misfit (just take a gander at these photos and you’ll understand why). Their latest endeavor, transforming three plots of land in Joshua Tree, CA into pure Airbnb heaven (take a deeper look at our stay). We took a break from shooting our travel guide to interview these two on all things holistic living, married life, and what’s to come!

VÉRITÉ: The two of you packed up your stuff and moved to Joshua Tree to build beautiful getaways that can be reached by Airbnb. What stemmed this big move?

Tienlyn & Nikko: We visited Joshua Tree about a year and a half ago to do a photoshoot for a jewelry company, and just fell in love with the landscape. It was like there was a magnetic pull drawing us here! At first we thought we would just have a vacation home here, but before we knew it, we were packing the car and moving our things down for good. This area has an insane amount of creative energy both in the community and in the natural landscape. There is space to think here. And that really lets you listen to what’s most important to you.

V: You two believe strongly in wellness, and natural living — how have you implemented this into Cactus Mountain?

T&N: Well being and natural living are definitely a huge part of why we moved down here, actually. You can really tune into both yourself and your environment, which is what inspired a lot of our design choices with Cactus Mountain. The house itself is a renovated mid century homesteader and we love that we got to bring it back to life. It’s also on a gray water system, so any water used in the house is reused for the plants. Because the water goes to the plants, we only use organic, all natural products — from our cleaning supplies to the shampoo and conditioner, etc. It’s kind of its own ecosystem in many ways.

Tienlyn: I find that a routine is the only way I can stay on track! Some things that I do religiously are to drink 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon of honey in 8 oz of water every morning, before anything else. After coffee, we usually juice, using as many veggies and fruits from our own garden, which is just starting to thrive!
I’m also a big fan of dry brushing. I try to dry brush before every shower and I love the results. Because we’re in the desert, there’s not a lot of moisture in the air. I feel like dry brushing before showering and then applying coconut oil (Kapuluan Coconut is my favorite) after leaves my skin incredibly soft and smooth

V: Did you ever think your blog would transform into this kind of lifestyle platform?

Tienlyn: I didn’t but I did always hope it would! I just adore fashion, which is where I started, and am now starting to really build out more of the lifestyle side. In my opinion, fashion can feel vacant if you don’t take your entire lifestyle into consideration. Aesthetically and stylistically speaking, the things I am inspired by are things that align with my perspective of the world. I also think that style is holistic. It’s not just the clothes you wear. It’s the things you do, the products you use, the foods you choose, the culture you consume.

V: What do you hope to share with women across the world through your personal style, and through sharing your workouts, diet, beauty routine, etc.?

Tienlyn: Especially in this day and age, I really believe that you have to create your own world, but in order to do this you need to have confidence. There’s nothing that bothers me more than a woman who doesn’t realize her worth and I really want to inspire women on some level to be the best version of themselves. There’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself because it’s one of the highest forms of self respect. We all deserve that.
I also want to show that there are alternative ways to take care of ourselves – that don’t necessarily hurt the world around us. And of course, I’m not perfect at this either, but I’m constantly trying to improve. So hopefully that comes across as well.

And how you’ve managed to collaborate romantically, and professionally on so many levels?

Tienlyn: Nikko was living in Toronto and I was living in San Francisco. We were introduced by a mutual acquaintance because we were both working on music at the time. It was an instant connection. We decided to collaborate on a song and ended up spending more time talking than working on the song. Nikko moved from Toronto to San Francisco, and six months later we eloped.
Having our relationship start on a creative and collaborative level really set a good foundation for continuing to work together. Our values and life goals are basically identical, and we’re lucky enough that our aesthetics, talents and interests complement each other as well. This Power Couple Goes Off The Grid For Their Latest Collab. on veritepublished.com, Tienlyn Thoughtful Misfit, Personal Style, Joshua Tree, Travel, Interior Design Inspiration, Power Couple, Relationship Goals, Green Living, Fashion Blogger, OOTD, Desert Inspiration, Photoshoot, Photography

V: You both have killer personal styles, what would you want to share about how you’ve come to curate such strong styles?

Tienlyn: There has been a lot of trial and error along the way. I remember looking back on photos of us from our earlier years together and joking with Nikko that we’ve loved each other regardless of a lot of bad hair choices. And I mean a lot. That’s true love right there.
It’s funny because our styles really complement each other, but that was never intentional. I think we both like to take risks but we both also pare it back a bit to make it work with our lifestyle. We definitely adjust our personal style to our surroundings. For instance we’ve both been big denim fans for years, but since moving to the desert, this has become even more prevalent in our wardrobes.
These days, we both like to look at the story behind a brand – it’s a big part of our choice to wear something. Are they creating their products in a responsible way? Are their designs thoughtful? Do they have a strong point of view? These are the things that really inspire us.

Tienlyn: I don’t have a lot of regrets in life, but the one thing I wish I understood at an earlier age is that if you really love doing something, you can make a living at it — even if no one has managed to do it successfully before you! You just have to work incredibly hard and keep your end goal in mind, but also be open-minded along the way. There are new opportunities that will arise and feel like a curve ball, but they could end up being the best thing that ever happened to you. For me, that has been working on properties with Nikko. It’s not where I thought I would end up, but it’s actually way better. It can be stressful, but trust me — we are having the time of our lives!

V: Three books that have changed your lives?

Nikko: Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth by Buckminster Fuller

Tienlyn: The Diary of Anais Nin (all of them, but the second volume holds a special place in my heart. I’ve read it so many times. At this point, the cover has ripped off and the pages are covered in notes written to myself over the years.)
The Steppenwolf — maybe my favorite book. I can relate to a lot of Harry Howler’s perspective of having one foot in society and a more reclusive one in the wild. I think the book is often misunderstood as being angsty, but I see it as an incredible story of coming to terms and hope. To me, it’s an inspirational book. But actually, everything I’ve ever read by Herman Hesse has been pretty life changing.

Tienlyn: At the beginning of this year, we bought a geodesic home in Joshua Tree on about 5 acres of land, which we named the Buckminster House, aka The Bucky, after Buckminster Fuller, who was a visionary, and an architect among other things, but also the inventor of the Geodesic Dome. We have a lot of ideas for this property, and I can’t wait to get started!
As for the blog, I’m really trying to refocus on the the concept of doing things in a way that is both thoughtful and entirely one’s own. I want to highlight brands, people, and products that provide real value to the world. I’m also actively working to highlight incredible designers that are totally unique and that aren’t household names, hopefully through a boutique that should go live soon. When my readers come to Thoughtful Misfit, I want them to discover things they don’t see everywhere else. Much like Cactus Mountain, it’s about the full experience.
