It’s in my roots to be what I call a kitchen beautician. My mother is one in her own right, always passing on her knowledge — olive oil acts as food for the cuticles and eyelashes when needing length and strength. A glass of whole milk in the bath makes for a wonderful skin cure. Coffee grounds are your best exfoliant. Steeped green tea bags wake sleepy eyes. Thus, it’s only natural that many of my beauty routines do not come in a pretty package, but from the pantry. Cue my ultimate beauty secret, a hybrid concoction of this knowledge and my studies of ayurvedic medicine — The Everyday Queen Mask.
This face mask is truly made for a queen (you’ll find out why in a second) and is made up of three exotic yet easy ingredients that in their own right gift skin with nourishment, and a proper glow — we may have found the fountain of youth here people! This is a mask that I turn to once a week (twice if I’ve been traveling or in the sun an extensive amount). Depending on how much of your body you would like to cover in this dreamy potion, we’ve included measurements providing enough for face, neck, and the back of your hands — essentially all the places that suffer most from harsh elements, sun damage, and aging. On that note, let me introduce you to the trifecta:
1 tbsp Raw Honey: This sweet ingredient is the basis of the lush mask not only for its beneficial elements but also because raw honey’s coarse texture acts as an amazing exfoliant for wiping away dead skin cells, and build-up that sits atop our pores. Also adding to this cleansing process is it’s ability to work as an antibacterial and anti-fungal — working wonders on acne. The raw honey is insanely moisturizing, leaving skin with a plump, succulent feel for hours after the mask has been washed away. I prefer the 365 Whole Foods Mountain Forest Organic Raw honey US Grade A.
Half tsp (or product provided spoon full) Royal Jelly: this ingredient is truly lush, and royal indeed — royal jelly is produced in bee hives to feed the Queen during her life span. In the beauty world it is said to have magical anti-aging powers. Naturally containing silicon and anti-oxidants, royal jelly will increase the collagen produced in your cells, which literally slows the aging process. It is also brimming with lots of other great things like enzymes, zinc, and all kinds of B vitamins. It can get pricey to pick up at the store, but purchasing from a certified brand such as this one is worth it’s weight in gold.
A few splashes of Rose Water: I have written about rose water time extensively because it has so many amazing benefits for our complexions (I use it daily, especially when returning from long jaunts in the sun). It too acts as an antibacterial, but further its anti-inflammatory aspects diminish redness or swelling from our exterior, and act as a natural SPF. It is calming to skin that has been through the ringer — like a vacation for your pores. I live off of Santa Maria Novella’s Acqua Di Rose. If you want to stick with the entirely natural ingredients you can make your own rose water by crushing fresh organic rose petals into the mixture.
Mix these three with a spoon in a bowl until the honey melts into the rose water, and apply with fingers to areas of need.
