FEMME FEED | AN INSTALLATION OF “OF THE MOMENT”
STORIES FOR GIRLS IN THE KNOW.
Who run the world? Educated girls! In author Paul Hawken’s recent book Drawdown he shared a comprehensive plan to reverse global warming and the damage we have done to our earth — all solutions within our everyday reach. Number six on his list is us! Yep, girls can save the world, but we need to get educated first. While in the United States provides students with educational resources no matter their gender, many third world countries do not have the same offerings.
Hawken’s research shows that it is specifically educating women that will help bump up the worlds economy, while simultaneously aiding in managing population issues that add to the decline in resources. An infographic by the Global Partnership of Education tells us that 15 million girls will never get the opportunity to attend primary school, compared to the 10 million boys who will. Many of these cases are due to schools not being made female friendly, the cost of the school vs. the poverty of the girl’s family, not being able to attend school while menstruating, and early marriage. However, getting them in school young and keeping them there can halt issues such as girls being married off when they are still children.
So what exactly can ensuring education for the young women mean? Well firstly, it can keep them and their future children alive! Educated females have a lower rate of maternal and child mortality. That same infographic tells us the kiddie of an educated mother is 50% more likely to live past 5 years of age, and their child will be past down a level of knowledge as well. Simultaneously, educated women are less likely to have large families while living in poverty — a huge detriment to our hemorrhaging population. It will also lower the percent of HIV/AIDS transmitted due to a better understanding of sexual education. School will give them the ability to understand the benefits of a more sustainable lifestyle, reducing CO2 by an estimated 119.2 gigatons by 2050. That’s the biggest save research has stumbled upon thus far.
Once educated, these women will give back opportunities to communities and Mother Earth in countless ways. Staying in school means they’re eligible for higher wages, and more upward mobility in their field — plus/plus for the economy, and their families. These women will be able to give back to industries such as agriculture, and rebuilding their local economies. Not to mention they will deliver a fresh POV to worldly issues in their communities and on a global front.
The education of girls worldwide has been on an upward trajectory, but we need to ensure it doesn’t stop here! By making schools affordable, providing women with satisfactory hygiene products, and by making schools female-friendly we can help save our biggest Girl Boss — Mother Earth!
